She hears the earth’s music

She has spent 24 years on the little island.  The first 20 with a husband and children.  The last 4 alone.  The children have grown up and are now gone.  The husband is gone too.  He isn’t dead.  Just gone.  The little cabin runs on solar power, and she drinks the water from the lake.  Each day she watches the sunrise and the sunset.  Those who know her think she is too sensitive.  She thinks she isn’t too sensitive, she just pays attention.  One evening a few weeks ago as she was washing up the days dishes, she heard something.   She didn’t know what it was, she just knew she wasn’t alone.  She walked out the back door and headed towards the noise.  It didn’t take long for her to reach the other side of the island and there she found a panting loon.  The water levels on the lakes were at their all time high this spring.  Her dock was completely submerged and so was the loon nest and two eggs.   She let the panting cries of the loon fill her, and she let her own feelings of lost hopes and dreams fill her too.  They both cried.
